THE ENVIRONMENT DIMENSION Print
In sharing our belief and commitment to HSSE sustainable development practices externally, the Group has embarked on two environment projects, namely:

  PETRA-UNDP Mangrove Regeneration Community-led Environment Project
  PETRA (Miri) Marine Environment Conservation Project


PETRA-UNDP MANGROVE REGENERATION COMMUNITY-LED ENVIRONMENT PROJECT



To share our beliefs in sustainable development practices (HSSE) externally, the company embarked on an environment-related CSR project involving the Local Community. The Mangrove Regeneration Community Project was created to portray a new dimension in the company’s environmental practices.

 
What is it A two-year environmental pilot project with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Terengganu S tate Government and University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT)
What was the objective
To create awareness of HSSE.
To promote sustainability of the local environment – in the utilisation of objective land and resources
To generate supplementary income for the local community
To involve community participation
To enable Petra to “give back” to the community/local environment in which it operates
Activities Conducted
Replanting 10,000 mangrove saplings on a 8-hectare mangrove ecosystem in Conducted Setiu, Terengganu
Create a co-operative for the community to promote an increase in economic activity via various community initiatives (mangrove nursery, tourism)
Creation of a mangrove management plan for project replication elsewhere
To inculcate environmental values to school children, Petra initatied the formation of  "Environment Clubs" in 2 primary schools, located within the project vicinity to create greater awareness of the mangrove ecosystem.
Benefits
Improves the Bio-diversity of the mangrove ecosystem
Provides S upplementary income for the communities through produce from mangrove vegetation, eco-tourism and others
Promotes awareness among the local community on sustainable management of mangrove ecosystem
Project site becomes a ‘living laboratory’ for UMT
Provides a documented management plan for replication of mangrove regeneration elsewhere



MARINE ENVIRONMENT CONSERVATION PROJECT (MIRI, SARAWAK)

Given the nature of Petra Energy’s offshore work in the upstream oil and gas industry the company take a serious view about environment conservation. In fact, it operates on the premise that environment conservation is a shared responsibility. This can be done by engaging all of our employees, contractors and the public on keeping our environment clean at all times.
 

What is it Quarterly Beach Upkeep and S tream O utlet Maintenance (to improve the water quality of small streams) and Conservation Awareness
Activities Conducted Physical beach clean-up in Tanjung Lobang, Miri involving employees of the Group
Benefits Improves the aesthetics of the environment, whilst promoting bio-diversity & improving water quality
Sustainability The upkeep will be repeated quarterly at a beach pre-selected by departmental teams within the office.
